The All Progressives Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party have rejected a proposed United States bill recommending visa bans and asset freezes against former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, over alleged religious freedom violations.
The bill, introduced in the US House of Representatives, also targets the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association and other groups under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.
Reacting to the proposal, the APC said allegations alone cannot justify sanctions without a fair hearing and due process, urging the US to uphold democratic principles.
On its part, the NNPP described the move as political blackmail, insisting that Kwankwaso has no record of religious extremism and should not be singled out.
Meanwhile, Miyetti Allah has denied the allegations, stating that it is a lawful organisation and not involved in terrorism, while calling on the Nigerian government to engage the US diplomatically.
Report has it that the proposed bill is yet to be passed into law.
