Crisis in Ondo APC: Elders Warn Ward Congress Fallout Threatens Party Unity

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have raised alarm over deepening divisions within the party following recent ward congresses, describing the fallout as a threat to unity and stability.

At a monthly meeting in Akure on Wednesday, the PBAT Mandate Elders Forum lamented that the ward congresses, particularly in Idanre Local Government Area, were marred by parallel exercises and violence that left supporters injured and undermined confidence in internal party processes.

One of the incidents involved suspected political thugs attacking members in Idanre, with several injured and the state APC chairman’s brother among those affected.

Ondo APC Elders Seek Tinubu’s Intervention After Ward Congress Chaos
Dr. Ademola Ijabiyi, facilitator of the elders group, said the unrest has “basically divided the party” and expressed hope that President Bola Tinubu, as national leader of the APC, would help resolve the crisis.

“We cannot ignore what happened at our ward congress, where we had parallel congresses in most wards,” Ijabiyi said, noting the elders had written to Tinubu seeking action to prevent permanent splits within the party.

Mr. Olorunnibe Tawose, vice chairman of the forum, added that their regular meeting also focused on caring for elderly members’ health, but the dominant concern was the political rift triggered by the recent party exercise.

The appeal for national leadership intervention comes amid broader concerns over intra-party cohesion in the run-up to the 2027 general elections, as the APC struggles to manage internal disputes during key organisational activities.
