The Federal Government is in discussions with the World Bank for three proposed loans totalling $1.5bn, with the financing expected to support climate resilience, social protection and early childhood development. The proposals come as Nigeria’s public debt reached N166.79tn at the end of June 2026.

The proposed facilities comprise three separate $500m financings. The first is additional funding for the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes project, known as ACReSAL, which operates across 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory. The World Bank is scheduled to consider the facility on October 29, 2026.

The other proposals are linked to social protection and early childhood development programmes and remain at earlier stages of preparation. The World Bank documents indicate that the proposed financing is still subject to the relevant review and approval processes and does not yet represent funds disbursed to Nigeria.

FG’s 30-day petrol discount sparks opposition backlash

Opposition leaders and political groups have criticised the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount through NNPC stations, questioning its affordability, reach and sustainability as Nigerians grapple with rising fuel prices.
