The Gombe State Government has pledged to implement recommendations by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria following its investigation into the collapse of the reinforced concrete entrance canopy at the new State House of Assembly complex. Deputy Governor Manassah Jatau gave the assurance while receiving the investigative panel’s report.
COREN said its investigation found that the project’s consulting structural engineer was qualified but that the contractor failed to engage some required registered professionals, including engineers and architects. The council also identified deficiencies in temporary formwork and the construction sequence as probable contributing factors, while tests indicated that the remaining structure, concrete and reinforcement were technically adequate.
The council approved the resumption of construction subject to stronger professional supervision, engagement of qualified personnel and compliance with approved engineering standards. Jatau said the government would study and implement the recommendations, adding that project quality and public safety would take priority over speedy completion.
