Military Defends Borno Strike As Death Toll Rises

The Nigerian Military has officially defended a recent airstrike conducted in Borno State, asserting that the operation was a precision strike aimed at neutralizing high-ranking terrorist commanders. This statement comes as local reports indicate a rising death toll, with concerns growing over potential collateral damage in the affected communities.

According to a spokesperson for the Defense Headquarters, the mission was launched based on credible intelligence pinpointing a gathering of insurgents in a remote area of the state. The military maintains that the target was a legitimate military objective and that all standard operating procedures were followed to minimize civilian presence in the strike zone.

"Our intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platforms confirmed the presence of armed combatants at the location," the military statement read. "While we deeply regret any loss of innocent lives, it is important to understand that these operations are carried out in highly volatile areas where terrorists deliberately embed themselves within local populations."

However, residents and community leaders have disputed the military’s account, claiming that the strike hit a residential area, resulting in the deaths of women and children. The rising death toll has sparked calls from human rights organizations for an independent investigation into the incident. 

In response to the backlash, the Borno State Government has called for calm while it conducts its own assessment of the situation. The military has promised to review the after-action reports to determine if there were any technical or intelligence failures. As security operations intensify in the North-East, the balance between aggressive counter-insurgency and the protection of civilian lives remains a critical challenge for the Nigerian armed forces in 2026.
