A woman and her 14-year-old daughter have died after a three-storey building under construction collapsed in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident occurred at about 9:45 pm on Wednesday, trapping the mother and daughter inside their home in a neighbouring bungalow. Other people caught in the rubble were rescued by emergency responders and taken to hospital, according to residents.

Eyewitnesses said the building made loud cracking sounds before it collapsed, throwing residents into panic.

Residents alleged that they had previously raised concerns about the construction because the land was waterlogged. They claimed an engineer who initially handled the project had recommended that the building should not exceed two floors, but the advice was ignored.

The woman’s son, identified as Chimobi, said three family members were inside the apartment when the building fell. He said he was outside while his mother and sister were in a bedroom and had no opportunity to escape.

Anambra State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, said the building was illegal and that authorities had previously issued a stop-work notice. He attributed the collapse to poor-quality construction and said the government had ordered the structure’s demolition.

Ojukwu also said the land would be forfeited to the state government and that authorities were investigating other unapproved buildings under construction in the area.

The cause of the collapse has not been independently established, and the investigation remains ongoing.
