Nigeria’s equities market extended its losses last week as 55 stocks recorded price declines, compared with 20 that posted gains on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX).

The downturn reduced the exchange’s total market capitalisation by more than ₦206 billion, from ₦160.725 trillion in the preceding week to ₦160.519 trillion.

The NGX All-Share Index also declined to 247,222.27 points from 247,539.73 points, reflecting continued selling pressure after substantial gains earlier in the year.

Despite the market’s negative performance, trading activity increased. Investors exchanged approximately 2.024 billion shares valued at ₦110.773 billion in 173,113 deals, compared with 1.659 billion shares worth ₦98.088 billion in 184,632 deals in the previous week.

The financial services sector led trading by volume, accounting for 1.111 billion shares valued at ₦53.908 billion. Consumer goods followed with 394.039 million shares worth ₦9.811 billion, while agriculture recorded 147.170 million shares valued at ₦2.821 billion.

Market analysts attributed the weakness partly to profit-taking as investors reassessed their portfolios after strong earlier gains. They cautioned that further selling in large-capitalisation stocks could prolong the market’s consolidation.

Although the broader market remained under pressure, selected equities continued to attract buying interest, highlighting the uneven performance across listed companies.

Investors will continue to monitor corporate earnings, valuations and economic developments as the market navigates the latest correction.
