Stanley Nwabali has strengthened his claim to the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper position after producing a crucial save in Nigeria’s 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo. Coach Eric Chelle and former African Footballer of the Year Victor Ikpeba both praised the Chippa United goalkeeper after the match.
Nwabali started ahead of Arthur Okonkwo and Maduka Okoye, with Okoye arriving in camp only hours before kick-off after missing the team’s training sessions earlier in the week. Nwabali’s second-half one-on-one save kept Nigeria in the contest before George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor completed the turnaround.
The competition for the No.1 shirt remains open, with Okonkwo also pushing for a place after an encouraging start to his international career and Okoye now back in full training. Nigeria next face Guinea-Bissau in Bissau on September 29.
