Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo has granted pardon and other forms of executive clemency to 101 inmates and convicts as part of activities marking Nigeria鈥檚 66th Independence anniversary. The governor announced the decision in his Independence Day address on Thursday, saying it was based on factors including rehabilitation, remorse, health conditions and humanitarian considerations.

According to Ododo, 94 beneficiaries were granted mercy, while seven others had their sentences reduced after the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy reviewed their cases and visited correctional centres across Kogi. The governor urged the beneficiaries to regard the decision as a second chance and return to their families and communities as responsible citizens.

Ododo also called on young people to reject criminal activities, including kidnapping, armed robbery, fraud, cultism and drug-related offences, while urging parents, traditional and religious leaders and community organisations to support efforts to combat crime.
