One person has been confirmed dead and eight others are missing after a boat carrying mourners capsized at the Buruku River crossing in Benue State. The State Emergency Management Agency said three people were receiving hospital treatment while other passengers had been rescued.
The passengers were returning from a burial ceremony when the accident occurred on Saturday. Preliminary accounts indicate that the boat developed an engine fault and was heavily loaded with passengers and motorcycles, while another state account said strong currents pushed the vessel towards an abandoned barge.
Search-and-rescue operations are continuing, with boat operators and their union directed to assist downstream. Authorities have yet to establish the exact number of people who were aboard, with estimates ranging from more than 70 passengers to about 200.
