The Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, OSOPADEC, has officially flagged off its 2024/2025 Scholarship and Bursary Award, reaffirming its commitment to supporting students from its mandate areas through targeted educational intervention. The ceremony was held at the Commission’s boardroom and attended by government officials, student leaders and other stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of OSOPADEC, Prince Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye, appreciated Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, members of the board, management and other stakeholders for their continued support. He also commended student leaders for sustaining a cordial relationship with the Commission, which he said had helped the success of the initiative.
Poroye urged beneficiaries to be worthy ambassadors of both the Commission and Ondo State by maintaining strong academic performance and responsible conduct. He also announced a policy direction that gives more consideration to female students in the scholarship category, disclosing that three of the five proposed scholarship slots for outstanding students would go to female candidates.
The OSOPADEC chairman further unveiled new initiatives designed to strengthen academic excellence and professional development. According to him, the Commission is introducing scholarships for first-class students in Science and Engineering disciplines and also launching specialised scholarship and sponsorship programmes for Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, which he described as vital to the well-being of communities in the mandate areas.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Mr. F. A. Omomowo, said the bursary scheme was designed to reduce the financial burden on parents and guardians, while the scholarship component aims to reward academic excellence. He added that the process would be transparent, digital and strictly merit-based, warning that impersonation and falsification of information would not be tolerated.
Also speaking, the Director of Community Welfare, Comrade Kayode Ebiseni, outlined the registration process and eligibility requirements. He said applicants must be indigenes of Ilaje or Ese-Odo Local Government Areas and full-time students of recognised tertiary institutions, including postgraduate students and those at the Nigerian Law School. He added that part-time, pre-degree, sandwich, NTI and unaccredited diploma students are not eligible.
Ebiseni listed the required documents as a recent passport photograph, proof of local government of origin, JAMB admission letter, school fees receipt for the 2024/2025 session and a valid student identity card, adding that the registration slip must be duly signed and stamped by the appropriate school authority before submission.
The event also featured goodwill messages from stakeholders, including the Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on OSOPADEC, Hon. Primate Toyin Allen, and student leaders, who commended the state government and the Commission for prioritising education and student welfare. The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of an Award of Excellence to the Executive Chairman by NAIS and FELGOS.
