Sources close to the development said the minister is expected to step down in the coming weeks if he proceeds with his ambition to contest the governorship race in the state.
Adelabu had earlier declared his interest in the Oyo governorship contest, recalling his previous attempts against the incumbent governor, Seyi Makinde, in the 2019 and 2023 elections.
Meanwhile, stakeholders in the Nigerian electricity sector have urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to appoint a competent technocrat should the position become vacant. They argued that the next minister must possess strong knowledge of the power sector and focus on addressing the country’s persistent electricity challenges.
A power sector expert, Bode Fadipe, advised that the replacement should have a national development agenda rather than political interests. Similarly, the Convener of PowerUp Nigeria, Adetayo Adegbemle, said whoever takes over the role must clearly understand the challenges facing Nigeria’s electricity industry and be able to reduce political interference in the sector.
Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor (Operations) of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was appointed Minister of Power in 2023 to oversee reforms in the country’s struggling electricity sector.
