The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the attack on Tuesday, saying the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Shagari had briefed the command on the incident. However, Rufai said the police were still gathering information to establish what happened and determine the casualties.
“I just spoke with the DPO in charge of Shagari now, who confirmed the attack on some communities in the local government,” Rufai said, adding that the command could not immediately provide further details.
The confirmation followed reports of armed bandits moving through farmlands and communities in the area, particularly towards Sanyin Nawal village.
A resident, Hassan Sahabi, had earlier raised an alarm on social media, appealing for prayers and protection for residents after reportedly seeing armed men moving through the community.
Another account of the incident said the attackers moved through parts of Shagari in the morning before heading towards Sanyin Nawal, where they allegedly stopped vehicles and robbed travellers.
The attackers were also reportedly seen around a nearby pond before moving through surrounding villages. A motorcycle was allegedly set ablaze during the operation.
Later in the evening, around Maghrib, the bandits reportedly encountered a passenger vehicle and opened fire.
A police officer identified in reports as Inspector Isah Muhammad Girkau was allegedly hit by a bullet and later died from his injuries.
However, the police command had not officially confirmed the identity of the deceased officer or provided a detailed account of the circumstances surrounding his death at the time of filing.
The latest incident adds to continuing security concerns in rural communities across Sokoto State, where armed groups have carried out attacks, killings, cattle rustling and abductions.
In September, police confirmed several separate attacks in Kebbe Local Government Area. Five people were killed and three injured in one attack on communities in Girkau Ward, while another incident in Dukura left two people dead and involved the rustling of livestock and motorcycles.
The police have continued to gather information on the latest attack as security agencies work to establish the full circumstances and casualty figures.
Residents in the affected communities have been urged to remain vigilant and provide relevant information to security agencies.
