The family of African Democratic Congress Lagos governorship aspirant Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has released historical documents, photographs and manuscripts in response to renewed debate over his Yoruba identity and Lagos ancestry. The materials, published through the Rhodes-Vivour Family Archives, document generations of the family’s involvement in commerce, law, public service and military service.
The archive traces the family through figures including 19th-century planter William Allen Vivour and Justice Stephen Bankole Rhodes II. Historical government records independently confirm that Rhodes was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in November 1945, while the family archive identifies its lineage with the Saro community of Africans who returned to West Africa from Sierra Leone.
The release follows renewed public discussion over Rhodes-Vivour’s cultural identity, including criticism of his limited Yoruba fluency as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship election. The family said the documents were released to counter what it described as attempts to misrepresent its history and longstanding connection to Lagos.
