President Bola Tinubu says Nigeria has moved beyond the most difficult phase of his administration’s economic reforms, declaring that the country is entering an era focused on shared prosperity. He made the statement in his Independence Day address on Thursday as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary.

Tinubu defended measures including petrol subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms, while acknowledging that the changes had caused hardship for many Nigerians. He said the government’s next priority was to reduce the cost of living by lowering production and transportation costs, while expanding agriculture, manufacturing and other productive sectors.

The President also ruled out returning to the petrol subsidy regime, arguing that reversing the reforms would undermine efforts to address longstanding economic problems. He said the administration would now focus on translating economic reforms into better living conditions, jobs and broader opportunities for Nigerians.
