Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has granted clemency to 27 inmates serving various sentences in correctional facilities across the state as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
State Commissioner for Information and Culture Ahmed Maiyaki said the latest exercise brings to more than 500 the number of inmates who have benefited from the governor’s prerogative of mercy since he assumed office in 2023. The administration also says more than N300 million has been committed to fines and compensation as part of interventions aimed at removing financial barriers preventing eligible inmates from regaining their freedom.
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice James Kanyip said the clemency process followed established legal procedures and considered rehabilitation, accountability and reintegration. He said beneficiaries were expected to return to society responsibly, while the government would continue programmes supporting rehabilitation and reconciliation.
