The event featured historian Prof. Osarhieme Osadolor, who delivered a keynote address titled “Oba Erediauwa’s Voice in Discourse: Defining His Intellectual Legacy.” The gathering formed part of activities marking the 10th coronation anniversary of the current Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.
Osadolor described the late monarch as a philosopher king whose leadership reflected wisdom and commitment to the public good. He called for greater recognition of Erediauwa’s writings and contributions to discussions on governance, education, religion and the economy.
Born Prince Solomon Igbinoghodua Akenzua in 1923, Erediauwa studied law at the University of Cambridge before entering Nigeria’s public service. He later became Oba of Benin in March 1979 and reigned until his death in April 2016.
His literary works include his autobiography, I Remain, Your Obedient Servant, and The Cradle of Ideas, a collection of speeches and writings published in 2013.
UNIBEN Vice-Chancellor Prof. Edoba Omoregie said the monarch’s life and writings offer valuable historical insight into Nigeria’s political development. The memorial series is intended to preserve his intellectual legacy and introduce younger generations to his ideas and contributions.
