President Bola Tinubu is expected to intervene in the ongoing disagreement between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
A senior presidential aide, who spoke to The PUNCH on condition of anonymity, said the President is expected to engage the parties in an effort to resolve their differences.
The proposed intervention is likely to take place in France, where President Tinubu is currently on vacation, before the end of the week.
The disagreement between Wike and some APC governors has centered largely on political alliances and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike, a leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party who serves in the APC-led Federal Government as FCT Minister, has been promoting the Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State in support of President Tinubu's 2027 presidential ambition.
However, Imo State Governor and Chairman of the APC Progressive Governors' Forum, Hope Uzodimma, said APC governors would not support any political arrangement capable of weakening the party or undermining its candidates. Uzodimma maintained that the governors' campaign commitment remains focused on APC candidates at all levels.
Wike, on his part, has defended the coalition, arguing that his support for President Tinubu does not amount to supporting APC candidates in other elections. The former Rivers State governor has also accused some APC governors of working against his political interests and the expansion of the Rainbow Coalition.
According to the report, the disagreement is also linked to wider political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections, including contests involving governorship and senatorial positions.
Some APC leaders and stakeholders have reportedly expressed concern over the dispute and its possible impact on the party's political activities.
The presidential aide said President Tinubu would seek to broker peace between the minister and the governors and prevent the disagreement from affecting their political cooperation.
Meanwhile, APC leaders in the South-East have expressed support for Governor Hope Uzodimma and the Progressive Governors' Forum following recent exchanges involving Wike.
In a joint statement, the South-East APC leadership called on the FCT Minister to uphold what it described as party discipline, mutual respect, and collective responsibility.
The party leaders also rejected attempts they believe could weaken the APC's structures in the region. The development comes as political parties and their leaders intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
