A bloc of the Peoples Democratic Party backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has installed a new National Working Committee at the party’s 2026 national convention held at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. The exercise was presented by organisers as part of efforts to reposition the opposition party ahead of future political contests.

At the convention, Abdulrahman Mohammed emerged as National Chairman, while Samuel Anyanwu emerged as National Secretary through a consensus process. Reports say other members of the new National Working Committee were also affirmed by delegates at the gathering.

The event drew delegates from several states, including Kebbi, Ekiti, Bauchi and others, although attendance reflected the internal divisions within the party, with some state chapters participating and others staying away. Punch reported that more than 2,500 delegates affirmed the officers, while Channels Television said the convention had delegates from different states across the country and featured several prominent party figures.

Among leaders present at the convention were former Senate President Bukola Saraki, former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, and former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, who all called for reconciliation, unity and rebuilding within the party. Wike also said the PDP would be on the ballot in the 2027 general elections.

However, the convention was not without controversy, as some party figures and state chapters described the exercise as illegal and stayed away, showing that the PDP’s internal crisis is yet to be fully resolved despite the emergence of the new leadership.
