The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has stopped selling Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol, to major marketers that import petroleum products into Nigeria.

An official of the refinery confirmed the decision, saying Dangote would no longer supply marketers it believes are blending its petrol with imported products. The refinery said it was concerned that mixing its locally refined fuel with imported grades could make it difficult to distinguish its products from those handled or blended by third parties.  

The refinery is instead selling petrol to independent petroleum marketers and other buyers that are not known to be importing the product. The development comes after Dangote had warned that it could stop doing business with fuel importers over concerns about product blending and quality.

The decision has heightened tensions between the refinery and petroleum marketers. Some marketers have criticised the restriction, arguing that Dangote is effectively attempting to prevent competition from imported petrol. They have also challenged the refinery to provide evidence that imported products entering Nigeria fail to meet regulatory quality standards.

The dispute is unfolding as Nigeria continues to balance growing domestic refining capacity with the need to maintain adequate petrol supplies. The Federal Government and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority have continued to permit imports when deemed necessary to prevent shortages.

The latest development could therefore deepen the competition between Dangote's domestic refinery and fuel importers, while also adding another dimension to ongoing disagreements over petrol imports, product quality, regulation and market access.
