Seven communities in Orogho Dukedom, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State, have petitioned the Oba of Benin over alleged mismanagement of funds received from oil companies for community development. The group, led by convener Osahon Imaru, alleged that N38.5m paid by NEW CROSS Petroleum to ancestral landowners and communities along its pipeline corridor was diverted.

The communities also alleged the unauthorised sale of a large parcel of land at Ere-Egwa Farm and complained about the administration of Enogie Prince Patrick Osayande Akenzua. They said they had documents supporting their claims and had previously approached local authorities after attempts to resolve the issues internally failed.

The stakeholders appealed to the Oba of Benin, the Edo State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Orhionmwon Local Government Council to intervene. They stressed that their action was not against the traditional institution but was aimed at securing transparency, accountability, community participation and development.
