THE menace of driving against traffic, popularly known as “one-way,” on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has become a major source of concern for regular users of Nigeria’s busiest and most strategic highway. This recklessness was once again underscored on May 20 when a dispatch rider was knocked down by a hit-and-run vehicle driving against traffic on the Magboro Bridge section of the expressway.

This was a gross violation of traffic regulations, and no one should lose their life because of the lawlessness of reckless motorists. Stretching 127 kilometres, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway carries enormous human and vehicular traffic throughout much of the day.

Yet, the persistent violation of traffic rules by motorists driving against the flow of traffic has led to recurring deaths and injuries involving both pedestrians and commuters. In the latest incident, the errant driver fled immediately after the crash.
