The British government has condemned anti-migrant protesters who blocked roads in Portsmouth after around 140 people arrived by boat from France. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered on Sunday evening as authorities prepared to transport the asylum seekers to a processing facility.

Police formed a cordon around buses carrying the migrants as protesters attempted to obstruct their movement. The asylum seekers were eventually transported safely, while authorities criticised behaviour that crossed the line from lawful protest into intimidation and disorder.

The Portsmouth demonstration followed another major anti-migrant protest near the Port of Dover a day earlier. The unusually western Channel crossing has also raised questions over whether people-smuggling networks may be testing alternative routes to the United Kingdom.
