Former Osun State House of Assembly member Olatunbosun Oyintiloye has criticised presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi over their plans to restore fuel subsidy if elected in 2027, describing the proposals as unrealistic and potentially disruptive to government finances.
Oyintiloye argued that federal and state finances, salaries and ongoing projects have already adjusted to the post-subsidy system, warning that a return to subsidy could reduce government revenue. He also questioned Peoples Redemption Party candidate Donald Duke’s proposal to reduce petrol prices to about ₦300 per litre, while acknowledging that current economic reforms have placed significant pressure on households and businesses.
Atiku has publicly pledged to restore petrol subsidy, while Obi has also said he would reintroduce a subsidy framework while addressing corruption associated with the previous system. Oyintiloye urged opposition candidates to present alternatives he considers sustainable and called on governments to ensure increased revenues translate into better infrastructure, healthcare, food production, employment and improved living standards.
