The Federal Government has evacuated another 111 distressed Nigerians from South Africa amid concerns over xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks, bringing the number repatriated under the ongoing exercise to 2,037. The returnees, comprising 44 men, 23 women and 44 children, arrived in Lagos aboard South African Airways Flight SA060 on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which announced the evacuation on Sunday, said the returnees were received by officials from the ministry, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, National Emergency Management Agency and other government bodies. The latest operation was the 15th consular evacuation from South Africa since the exercise began on June 10.

The ministry said the latest flight was funded through a $265,854 donation from the Redeemed Christian Church of God to provide one-way tickets for 500 distressed Nigerians. So far, 318 people have benefited from the church-funded intervention, leaving 182 more to be repatriated under the arrangement, while the Federal Government has fully funded the return of 1,388 Nigerians.

Authorities said engagement with South African officials would continue as Nigeria seeks to protect the welfare and safety of its citizens in the country.
