The Federal Government has trained 700 young people in Oyo State in digital and vocational skills as part of a national initiative targeting five million Nigerians for poverty reduction over the next four years.

The programme, implemented through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Education, is designed to tackle unemployment and help young Nigerians establish sustainable businesses.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony at the University of Ibadan on Friday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Dr Abiola Arogundade, said the initiative was focused on equipping beneficiaries with practical skills and tools to achieve economic independence.

Of the 700 beneficiaries in the Oyo phase, 30 received training in artificial intelligence and graphics design, while 85 participants each were trained in make-up artistry and fashion design. Another 500 beneficiaries received digital devices to support their participation in the digital economy.

The graduates received relevant equipment, including laptops, sewing machines, make-up kits and tablets, depending on their training and support package.

Arogundade urged the beneficiaries to use the skills and equipment to build viable businesses and share their knowledge with others in their communities.

The programme forms part of the Federal Government’s National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy, which seeks to expand employment, entrepreneurship and economic opportunities. Officials say the initiative will be extended to other states and geopolitical zones.

The government hopes the training will help beneficiaries generate income, create jobs and contribute to reducing poverty across the country.
