NEMA spokesman Manzo Ezekiel said the agency was maintaining its response because the rainy season was still ongoing, although the situation was not as severe as the same period last year. Search and rescue teams were being deployed to locations including Ebonyi and Rivers states, where flooding had been reported.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has also warned that heavy rainfall could continue, particularly across central and southern parts of the country. NEMA attributed flooding to both heavy rainfall and human factors such as poor town planning, construction on waterways and blocked drainage channels.
