The newlywed pastor made the disclosure in a statement released on Monday, saying he deeply regretted his past conduct and accepted responsibility for his actions. He apologised to the women involved, his wife, family, church members and others who had trusted him as a spiritual leader.
Adegoke said that although the relationships occurred before his marriage, he recognised that his conduct fell short of the standards of holiness, integrity and self-control expected of him as a Christian and minister.
He said he had spent the past few weeks away from public ministry and social media, using the period to reflect, seek counsel and address issues from his past. He also said he was receiving pastoral and professional counselling as part of the process.
According to the pastor, his decision to step back was intended to give him space to confront his conduct and make appropriate changes. He stressed that repentance should be demonstrated through changed behaviour, accountability and a willingness to accept the consequences of one's actions.
Adegoke also said he would continue submitting himself to spiritual, pastoral and professional accountability. He asked the public to pray for him, saying he wanted the humility and courage to face his actions honestly, make amends where appropriate and ensure that those affected were protected.
The pastor's announcement comes shortly after his marriage and has generated attention because of his decision to publicly acknowledge his past conduct and temporarily withdraw from public ministry.
