American rapper Nicki Minaj has called on celebrities, influencers and other public figures to speak more openly about violence affecting Christians in Nigeria, arguing that the issue is not receiving enough international attention. She made the remarks during an X Takeover event at Tesla’s Giga Texas facility in Austin, Texas, at the weekend.
Minaj said her interest in the situation developed partly through her Nigerian pastor and her large Nigerian fan base, popularly known as Barbz. She said reports about attacks on Christians had troubled her and questioned why more influential voices were not discussing the issue publicly.
The Grammy-nominated artiste expressed hope that other celebrities would use their platforms to raise awareness and said she intended to continue supporting efforts focused on the safety of Christians in Nigeria. Her latest comments follow earlier public statements in which she has spoken about what she describes as the persecution of Christians in the country.
Nigeria continues to face serious security challenges involving insurgent groups, armed gangs, kidnappers and communal violence across different regions. Christians have been among the victims of attacks, particularly in parts of the North-East and North-Central, although insecurity has also affected Muslims and other communities, and the causes of individual attacks can include terrorism, criminality, land disputes and communal conflict.
Minaj’s description of the situation as persecution reflects her own assessment and advocacy. While religiously motivated attacks have been documented, the broader nature and causes of Nigeria’s insecurity remain complex and vary significantly by location and incident.
