The Nigerian Television Authority reported the development on Monday, sharing photographs and a video from the ceremony on its official X account.
The new conferment follows the approval of 68 candidates by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee at its 174th plenary session in July. The group comprises 67 advocates and one academic, Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri, who was recognised for his contributions to legal scholarship.
Among those elevated is Kwara State Attorney-General, Senior Sulyman Ibrahim, whose nomination had been challenged by former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is one of the legal profession’s highest distinctions. It recognises outstanding professional achievement in courtroom advocacy or significant contributions to legal scholarship.
Before the formal conferment, the committee had directed successful candidates to complete a mandatory induction programme. It also warned them against publishing congratulatory advertisements or goodwill messages related to their elevation, cautioning that breaches could attract sanctions.
The swearing-in ceremony formally admits the successful candidates into the prestigious rank as the Supreme Court begins a new legal year.
