At NNPC retail stations visited in Abuja on Friday, petrol sold for ₦1,405 per litre at the pumps, while customers using the company’s application paid ₦1,339 per litre. The arrangement means motorists paying directly at the stations do not automatically receive the price reduction.
The discount, introduced on October 1 to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, has been extended until October 31 as part of efforts to ease the impact of rising fuel prices.
Meanwhile, NNPC could forgo an estimated ₦4.62bn in gross revenue if its reported monthly sales of 70 million litres were all sold at the discounted rate. The estimate compares revenue at the regular and reduced prices; the actual amount would depend on how much fuel qualifies for the offer.
Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele said the discount was designed to come from NNPC Retail’s profit margin and did not represent a return to government-funded petrol subsidy.
The Federal Government has ruled out restoring the former subsidy regime, warning that it could place significant pressure on public finances. NNPC said the promotion would not create a uniform pump price nationwide.
