An official of the National Youth Service Corps, Abbas Olalekan, has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta over his alleged involvement in the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo.

The prosecution told the court that the offence allegedly occurred between January and March 2026 in Abeokuta South Local Government Area.
According to the prosecution, the defendant allegedly had a relationship with the deceased, impregnated her, and supplied substances intended to terminate the pregnancy, which reportedly led to her death.

He was charged with conspiracy and attempting to procure an abortion, offences the prosecution said contributed to the tragic incident.
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Counsel to the defendant argued that the charges did not directly establish that his client was responsible for the death of the corps member.
The court subsequently granted him bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with two sureties, but ordered that he be remanded pending the fulfillment of the bail conditions.

The case has been adjourned for further hearing as investigations continue.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns about the safety, welfare, and oversight of corps members participating in Nigeria’s national service scheme.
