The Director of the Abuja Leadership Centre, University of Abuja, Professor Abdul Hamid Ozohu-Suleiman, has urged young people in the South-South region to look beyond the traditional sources of wealth and explore opportunities in other sectors of the economy.

He made the call during the Youth Leaders' Clinic for the South-South Zone held in Benin City, Edo State, where he challenged participants to develop entrepreneurial skills, embrace innovation and take responsibility for their economic future.

Ozohu-Suleiman identified agriculture, fishing, maritime transportation, logistics, technology, tourism, manufacturing and the creative industry as sectors with significant opportunities for young people. He maintained that natural resources alone could not guarantee development without vision, competence, integrity and responsible leadership.

The event attracted students from more than 10 secondary schools and was designed to equip emerging leaders, particularly school prefects, with practical leadership skills. The university don encouraged participants to turn their ideas into businesses and use their knowledge to create meaningful opportunities within their communities.

Also speaking, the South-South Zonal Coordinator of the centre, Emmanuel Osilama, said the programme was aimed at bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical leadership, stressing the importance of mentorship, exposure and ethical values in preparing young people for leadership responsibilities.
