The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced plans to stop students from collecting government-backed education loans while still allowing their parents to pay their school fees. The fund said it had identified cases of students benefiting from the loan scheme without informing their families, prompting fresh measures to improve transparency and prevent unnecessary financial burdens on parents.
NELFUND Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, disclosed this during a press briefing on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. He expressed concern that some beneficiaries were receiving assistance from the scheme while continuing to demand tuition payments from their parents. According to him, the agency intends to introduce a verification arrangement allowing parents to confirm whether their children's school fees have been settled through NELFUND, without necessarily revealing the amounts involved.

Sawyerr also announced plans to organise educational workshops across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones to explain changes to the student loan payment system. The exercise will involve students, parents and tertiary institutions, with particular attention to preventing misunderstandings about institutional payments, loan disbursements and beneficiaries' responsibilities. He explained that the initiative would go beyond the agency's regular awareness campaigns by focusing on how stakeholders can use the revised payment procedures.

NELFUND Executive Director, Mustapha Iyal, explained that the fund uses students' application identification numbers and linked wallets to process institutional payments, while upkeep allowances are transferred separately into beneficiaries' personal bank accounts. He disclosed that approximately 400,000 students were involved in the payment system's pilot phase, with about 20,000 additional students recorded over the preceding week. The platform was also processing transactions for nearly 5,000 students daily.

Iyal further clarified that beneficiaries can download payment receipts from the NELFUND platform once their institutional fees have been processed, although individual schools may still require separate receipts or clearance for registration. The latest measures are intended to improve accountability, reduce payment confusion and ensure that financial assistance reaches students who need it, while protecting parents from unknowingly paying fees already covered by the government loan scheme.
