One person has died and several others sustained injuries after a commercial bus carrying 21 passengers crashed and caught fire on the Oko-Olowo Expressway in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The accident occurred around Iye-Maja Junction on Sunday after the bus reportedly developed a tyre fault while in motion. The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle, causing it to somersault before it caught fire.

The Kwara State Fire Service said it received a distress call at about 6:35pm and immediately deployed firefighters to the scene. Passengers were evacuated from the burning vehicle, while those who sustained injuries were taken to a hospital for treatment. One passenger was, however, confirmed dead.

The Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy before embarking on journeys. He advised drivers to regularly inspect tyres, braking systems, electrical components and other critical parts to identify faults before they cause accidents.
