A joint security operation has killed a senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province, Abdussamad Ohida, also known as Anwar, alongside several other members of the terrorist group in Owo forest, Ondo State.

The operation, conducted at the weekend, involved troops of the Nigerian Army, operatives of the Department of State Services and personnel of the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun. Security sources said the forces launched a surprise assault on the group’s forest hideout.

Ohida was reportedly a senior ISWAP figure who previously served as deputy to Abu Ikrimah, also known as Abu Uwais, the former ISWAP Central Nigeria leader who was arrested by the DSS in 2023. Following Ikrimah’s arrest, Ohida allegedly assumed a leadership role in ISWAP activities across parts of North-Central and southern Nigeria.

Security sources said Ohida was allegedly planning major terrorist attacks in parts of southern Nigeria, including attacks intended to disrupt the 2027 general elections. The operation was reportedly launched after intelligence identified the group’s hideout in the Owo forest.

The operation also resulted in the deaths of several other members of the terrorist organisation, according to the security sources. Authorities have not publicly provided a complete casualty figure or detailed account of the weapons and equipment recovered from the hideout.
