The Federal High Court in Birnin Kebbi has convicted 19 people for offences involving terrorism, unlawful possession of firearms and vandalism of critical electricity infrastructure following 17 months of police investigation and prosecution. Justice Emmanuel Gakko delivered the judgments after cases arising from intelligence-led operations across Yauri, Bagudo, Sakaba and other security flashpoints in Kebbi State.
Two men, Aliyu Hadari and Umar Musa Uzzi, were convicted on three counts of terrorism, providing logistical support to an armed terrorist group and conspiracy to commit terrorism. They were each sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment on each count, while a vehicle and Bajaj motorcycle linked to the offences were forfeited to the Federal Government.
Eleven other defendants were convicted of unlawful possession of firearms after police recovered 11 assorted weapons, including locally fabricated pistols, a locally made Beretta pistol and dane guns. Among them was Chinese national Ripin Liu, who received a six-year prison sentence with an option of a fine, while the other defendants received jail terms ranging from two to four years.
The court also convicted six men — Sani Tanko, Ibrahim Hamza, Samson Sunday, Abdulrahman Isah, Adamu Musa and Masudu — for vandalising and stealing electricity cables in Sakaba Local Government Area. Their actions disrupted electricity supply to affected communities, and the court imposed sentences ranging from three to eight years.
Kebbi State Commissioner of Police Umar Hadejia described the convictions as evidence of the command’s determination to pursue complex cases to conclusion. He said operations against terrorism, illegal arms proliferation and economic sabotage would continue, while urging residents to report suspicious activities to security agencies.
