Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has urged Nigerian Army personnel to strengthen their mental resilience and promptly seek professional support when faced with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other psychological pressures arising from military operations.
Shaibu gave the charge on Wednesday, October 14, at the opening of a three-day seminar on Transformational Leadership, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Drugs/Substance Abuse at the 6 Division Nigerian Army Barracks in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He was represented at the event by Maj. Gen. Everest Okoro.
The Army chief said troops operate in demanding environments involving terrorism, insurgency, militancy, banditry, sea piracy and other security threats, exposing personnel to prolonged operational pressure and psychological strain. He stressed that effective military service requires not only physical fitness and tactical competence but also sound judgement, discipline and mental strength.
Shaibu said the seminar was designed to improve soldiers’ understanding of PTSD, substance abuse, leadership and unit cohesion while promoting early recognition and timely referral of personnel who may require professional assistance. The programme also includes an interactive session with soldiers’ families in recognition of the role spouses play in supporting personnel wellbeing.
Chief of Army Transformation and Innovation, Maj. Gen. Peter Okoye, also emphasised the need to protect troops’ mental health, saying the Army’s effectiveness depends not only on equipment and operational capabilities but also on the resilience and readiness of its personnel.
