The Nigerian Army has begun deploying 600 personnel to India for specialised jungle and mountain warfare training as part of efforts to improve troops’ combat capability in difficult environments. The first batch of 300 soldiers departed Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

The personnel travelled aboard two Indian Air Force aircraft, a C-17 and an Airbus A321. Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, said the programme is designed to improve operational proficiency in forests, mountainous terrain and other challenging areas where terrorists, insurgents and criminal groups operate.

Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, was represented at the departure by Major General U.G. Yusuf, Coordinator of the Nigerian Military Training Support and Advisory Team at the Army Headquarters Department of Army Training. The Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria was also present.

The Army said the programme forms part of its wider focus on realistic training, personnel development and operational readiness as Nigeria confronts evolving security threats. It also described the exercise as part of growing defence cooperation between Nigeria and India.

Arrangements are underway to transport the remaining 300 personnel to India. The Army said the training is expected to strengthen its ability to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity and improve troops’ effectiveness during operations in difficult terrain.
