President Bola Tinubu has called on both Christian and Muslim faithful to promote unity, peace and mutual respect as the seasons of Lent and Ramadan begin across Nigeria and around the world.
In a goodwill message on Tuesday, the president said the simultaneous commencement of Lent and Ramadan affords Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on shared values of compassion, forgiveness, tolerance and service to humanity.
Tinubu noted that periods of spiritual devotion such as Lent — observed by Christians with prayer, fasting and repentance — and Ramadan — observed by Muslims with fasting from dawn to sunset and increased acts of charity — remind believers of the importance of unity in diversity.
He urged adherents of both faiths to embrace the teachings of their religions to foster peace and strengthen the bonds of national cohesion.
“As we embrace the seasons of spiritual reflection and devotion, let us deepen our commitment to unity, peace and progress. Let us uphold the values of compassion and service that define our shared humanity,” the president said.
He also called on regional and community leaders to support efforts that encourage interfaith dialogue and cooperation, especially in light of global and national challenges.
Tinubu’s message comes at a time when several parts of the country continue to grapple with security, economic and social issues. The president said that collective religious goodwill and understanding can help bridge divides and promote a more inclusive and peaceful society.
The president wished all Christians observing Lent and all Muslims observing Ramadan a spiritually fulfilling period and prayed for renewed hope and blessings for Nigeria.
Religious leaders across the country have welcomed the president’s statement, affirming that harmony between faith communities is essential for national development and social stability.
