A United States-based pastor, Prophet Israel Ford, has sparked controversy after defending his decision to marry a second wife, insisting that biblical teachings commonly used to support monogamy are influenced by cultural traditions. Ford, who leads LifeWorks Church in Wickliffe, Ohio, introduced his second wife, Minister Shakayla Ford, alongside his first wife, Pastor Lydia Ford, during a church service on Sunday, October 25, 2026, generating widespread debate among Christians and social media users.
Speaking during an interview published on Tuesday, October 27, Ford argued that biblical passages describing church leaders as husbands of one wife should not automatically be interpreted as a universal prohibition against polygynous marriages. He maintained that such instructions were directed at particular church leadership positions and should be understood within their historical and cultural contexts. The pastor also compared the issue with biblical instructions concerning women's participation in church gatherings, which some Christian denominations interpret differently today.
The controversy deepened when Ford was questioned about whether his wives would also be permitted to marry additional husbands. He rejected the possibility, explaining that he would not accept such an arrangement. His response prompted further criticism from those who questioned the different expectations he placed on men and women. Ford defended his position by arguing that husbands and wives have distinct responsibilities within marriage, particularly regarding sacrifice and mutual respect.
His first wife, Lydia Ford, disclosed that discussions about bringing another woman into their marriage began between 2021 and 2022, when her husband told her he believed God was directing him towards plural marriage. She admitted initially rejecting the idea but explained that she later changed her position after a period of prayer, fasting, Bible study and personal reflection. Lydia also confirmed that she participated in the process that eventually led to Shakayla becoming her husband's second wife.
Shakayla, who previously regarded Ford as her spiritual mentor, acknowledged that adjusting to her new position required a transition but said Lydia helped her understand her responsibilities within the family.
She maintained that she had no intention of replacing or competing with the first wife and described their relationship as cooperative rather than confrontational. The pastor's statements have continued to generate discussions about marriage, religious interpretation and gender expectations within Christian communities.
