Twelve migrants have died in two separate incidents in the Aegean Sea near the Greek islands of Lesbos and Samos, according to Greek coast guard officials.

Six people, including a baby, died early Monday after a speedboat carrying migrants collided with a Greek coast guard patrol vessel near Lesbos. Eight other people were rescued and taken to hospital, while authorities began investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Officials said the speedboat struck the patrol vessel during a pursuit after changing course. A 37-year-old Turkish national who survived the incident was arrested on suspicion of migrant smuggling and involvement in the fatal accident. The investigation is ongoing, and the circumstances have not been fully established.

In a separate incident near Samos, six migrants died when another boat capsized. The coast guard said 14 people were rescued following the incident, which occurred several nautical miles north of the island.

The two incidents highlight the continuing dangers faced by people attempting to cross the Aegean Sea from Türkiye to Greece in small boats. The route is frequently used by migrants seeking to enter the European Union, but crossings can be hazardous, particularly when boats are overcrowded or unseaworthy.

Greek authorities continue to investigate both incidents. The nationalities of those who died were not immediately confirmed.

The tragedies add to the ongoing humanitarian concerns surrounding irregular migration and the risks faced by people attempting dangerous sea journeys to reach Europe.
