The Vatican confirmed that Pope Leo, 71, underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital to remove a cancerous growth from his right lung. The procedure was reported to have been successful, with the pontiff returning to his hospital room after the operation.
The Vatican said further medical assessments would be conducted to establish whether the disease had spread. The pope’s public engagements were cancelled through October 20 to allow time for recovery.
Meanwhile, Louis Prevost’s wife, Deborah, said that her husband was receiving treatment for multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting plasma cells. She said he was first diagnosed in 2017 and underwent treatment, including a stem cell procedure, in 2019.
According to Deborah, the illness remained at a low level for several years before relapsing about three months ago. Louis, who lives in Florida, is now participating in a clinical trial. His wife did not disclose the current stage of his illness.
Deborah said the brothers had spoken shortly before the pope’s operation and expressed hope for both men’s recovery.
The Vatican’s announcement has also raised questions about Pope Leo’s planned November visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. The status of the trip remains uncertain as he recovers.
