INEC Gives Pantami, Adebutu October 24 Deadline to Challenge Candidate Omissions

The Independent National Electoral Commission has given political parties until October 24, 2026, to notify it of alleged omissions from the final list of candidates for the 2027 governorship elections.

INEC announced the deadline in a statement issued by its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna. The commission said the window was provided under Section 32(2) of the Electoral Act, 2026.

Among the politicians affected by the omissions are Isa Ali Pantami, the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in Gombe State, and Oladipupo Adebutu, the party’s candidate in Ogun State. Aminu Gwarzo of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Kano was also reportedly omitted, while the African Democratic Congress in Jigawa raised concerns about its deputy governorship candidate, Aminu Ringim, and other candidates.

The dispute follows a September 24 Supreme Court judgment affirming the constitutionality of provisions requiring political parties to submit their membership registers within the prescribed period and use them for party primaries and conventions.

INEC said the court held that compliance with the requirements was mandatory and that parties which failed to meet them were ineligible to sponsor candidates. The commission said it applied the ruling when preparing the governorship candidates’ list.

Affected parties have until October 24 to notify INEC if they believe their candidates were wrongly excluded. The development comes ahead of the governorship elections scheduled for February 6, 2027.
