Social Democratic Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, Femi Olaniyi-Ferrari, has called for a comprehensive review of the state’s waste management system amid concerns over refuse accumulation in some communities. Olaniyi-Ferrari made the call in Lagos on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, saying the problem requires broader reforms beyond changes in the leadership of the Lagos Waste Management Authority.

The SDP candidate said the review should cover waste collection, transportation, disposal and recycling, as well as the operations of Private Sector Participation operators. He identified delayed payments, inadequate equipment and pressure on disposal facilities as areas requiring urgent attention to improve sanitation and protect public health.

Olaniyi-Ferrari proposed decentralising LAWMA’s operations into five regional hubs supported by transfer loading stations to reduce the distance waste trucks travel to disposal sites. He also suggested that the government provide CNG-powered compactors to PSP operators to improve collection efficiency and reduce operating costs.

As part of a longer-term strategy, he called for recycling plants in Epe and Ikorodu to turn waste into economic opportunities and create jobs. He also urged the state to assess the capacity of the Olusosun and Solous landfill sites and introduce measurable performance targets for waste management services.

His proposals come as Lagos continues to grapple with waste collection challenges. LAWMA has recently withdrawn the licences of six private operators over poor service, while the state government has said it is pursuing reforms to improve collection, disposal and recycling. Reports that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu asked LAWMA Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin to resign had not been formally confirmed by the state government at the time of reporting.
