The Oyo State Government and the 33 local government councils have approved ₦4.278 billion for the conduct of chairmanship and councillorship elections scheduled for December 29, 2026. Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, announced the funding on Tuesday following a meeting of the State Executive Council.

Under the arrangement, the 33 local governments will provide 60 per cent of the election funding, amounting to ₦2.5668 billion, while the state government will contribute the remaining 40 per cent, estimated at ₦1.7112 billion.

Oyelade said the council approved the state’s counterpart contribution to enable the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission to intensify preparations for the elections, which will be conducted across all 33 local government areas.

OYSIEC had earlier fixed December 29 for the polls after adjusting its timetable to avoid a clash with the 2027 general election schedule. The commission has also sought cooperation from the Independent National Electoral Commission, including access to an updated voter register and technical support ahead of the exercise.

The council elections will determine chairmen and councillors who will administer the state’s local governments, with preparations expected to continue in the weeks leading up to the December poll.
