Speaking to reporters on Monday during a visit to Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Rubio insisted that intelligence cooperation between the two countries had not stopped.
“There’s been no pause,” Rubio said, questioning Zelenskyy’s explanation and urging the Ukrainian leader to focus on efforts to end the war with Russia.
Zelenskyy had said in an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press that US intelligence sharing was blocked for a period before being restored. He said Ukraine was grateful for the resumption, adding that the country relies on American intelligence to detect Russian ballistic missile attacks.
The Ukrainian president said his country had not received the relevant information during missile attacks over a three-day period. Such intelligence can help Ukrainian forces identify incoming threats and prepare their defences.
The conflicting statements come amid growing strains between Washington and Kyiv over the conduct of the war and the future of US support for Ukraine. US President Donald Trump has also maintained that intelligence cooperation was continuing.
Zelenskyy has separately raised concerns about restrictions affecting Ukraine’s access to SpaceX’s Starshield satellite communications system. US officials have denied that the administration ordered the restrictions.
The latest disagreement leaves competing accounts of whether an interruption occurred, with no independent confirmation in the public statements cited. Ukraine continues to face Russian missile and drone attacks as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain a central focus.
