The Anambra State Government has confirmed a case of Lassa fever linked to Omasi community in Ayamelum Local Government Area and activated an emergency response to prevent further transmission.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, announced the development at an emergency stakeholders’ meeting in Awka on Monday. The affected patient is receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, in Ebonyi State.

Obidike said the state had strengthened disease surveillance and public awareness, while activating its Incident Management System with support from health partners, including the World Health Organisation and Médecins Sans Frontières.

As part of the response, health officials are expected to visit the affected household, identify people who had contact with the patient and assess their exposure levels for appropriate monitoring.

The commissioner urged residents experiencing persistent fever or malaria-like symptoms that do not improve with appropriate treatment to seek medical attention promptly. He also warned against relying solely on self-medication.

State Epidemiologist Dr Chuma Emembolu advised residents to keep food covered, store it in rodent-proof containers and maintain clean surroundings to reduce the risk of contamination by rats.

Residents were also warned to avoid direct contact with the blood and other body fluids of suspected or confirmed Lassa fever patients.

The state government urged people in Omasi, other communities in Ayamelum and across Anambra to cooperate with health officials and avoid sharing unverified information as surveillance and monitoring continue.
