Speaking on behalf of the community, Ms Peggy Agbo said the crisis followed the state government's decision to revoke the regency of HRH Nicholas Odamah III and appoint Lukeman Momodu as his replacement. She said the development had generated dissatisfaction among sections of the community, particularly those who believe the previous leadership arrangement had helped maintain peace.
Agbo explained that the state government, through the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, had attributed the decision to disputes surrounding traditional leadership in the clan, maintaining that the move was intended to promote peace, stability and due process. However, she questioned what had changed to warrant the removal of the regent.
She warned that a breakdown of peace could result in loss of lives, destruction of property, disruption of economic activities and divisions among families and kindreds. She therefore urged the governor to suspend the decision, engage impartially with concerned stakeholders and ensure that due process was followed in resolving the dispute.
Reacting, Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, said the government's decision was based on court rulings. The kingship dispute has reportedly lingered for months, with competing claims over traditional leadership in the Ikpeshi/Egbigere Clan.
