Registered dietitian-nutritionists have advised Nigerians to avoid boiling unpeeled and unwashed eggs together with rice because of the potential risk of cross-contamination. They said bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli may be present on eggshells and could transfer to the rice during cooking.

The experts acknowledged that some people cook both foods together to save time and cooking fuel, but warned that eggs may crack during the process, allowing their contents and contaminants from the shell to come into contact with the rice. They recommended cooking the foods separately as a precaution.

They also stressed that proper food handling remains important, including using clean eggs, maintaining kitchen hygiene and ensuring food is thoroughly cooked. The warning is primarily about reducing the possibility of cross-contamination and foodborne infections.
